- 1963-64 Studies at New York University, New York (History, Play Writing, Psychology)
- 1964-68 Studies in Bonn/Cologne (Political Science, Sociology, International Law) Master Degree in Political Science
- 1968-1988 Free lance work as a writer (non fiction, cultural history) and film maker (documentaries on cultural history and theory) in New York (1968-70), Paris (1970-1981), Bonn (1981-1990).
- From 1988 onwards: visiting professor in Frankfurt/M, Vienna, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Konstanz, Columbia University, Paris VI, Dartmouth College, N.H.
- 1990-1992: Fellow at the Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut in Essen
- 1991 Doctorate Degree (Dr. phil.) in Philosophy
- 1992 Habilitation: Venia: ‘Pedagogics, Cultural Studies, Media theory’

- Co applicant of a PhD program on ‘codification of violence in medial transformation’ (host university: Humboldt university, funded by the German research fund (DFG)
- ‘Gender as a category of knowledge’ (coordinator of a doctorate program on the topic, host university: Humboldt-University, funded by the Germany research fund DFG)
- Gender and religion (among other projects: processess of secularization and sacralization of nations (funded by the German research fund (DFG)))
- Media and the symbolic gender order (doctorate program, funded from 1999-2003 by the Evangelisches Studienwerk Villigst)
