History

Here you can find information on the history of the Department of Cultural History and Theory before and after it was re-established in the year 1993.

1963. The Philosophical Faculty at Humboldt University of Berlin offers for the first time a correspondence course program in Cultural History and Theory [Kulturwissenschaft].

1964. Since September 1st, HU offers Cultural History and Theory as a full-time diploma program. The education is directed toward practical and reflexive skills for professionals in cultural institutions, companies and administrations of the GDR.

1968. Humboldt University’s subdivided faculty structure is revoked. Instead, a sectional structure oriented on North American models, with sections and scientific fields, is introduced. The diploma program of Cultural History and Theory is subsequently held by the section of Aesthetics and History and Theory of Art [Ästhetik und Kunstwissenschaften].

1991. Due to the German reunification the sections are reorganized. The section of Aesthetics and History and Theory of Art is turned into the Department 8 History and Theory of Culture and Art [Fachbereich 8 Kultur- und Kunstwissenschaft].

1993. The degree program Cultural History and Theory is now part of the newly founded Department of History and Theory of Culture and Art [Institut für Kultur- und Kunstwissenschaften]. The degree program of Magister Artium that was established in 1992. is arranged by the Seminar of Cultural History and Theory [Kulturwissenschaftliches Seminar] in conjunction with the Seminar of Aesthetics [Seminar für Ästhetik].

2006.  Cultural History and Theory is offered for the first time as a Bachelor of Arts program. In addition, a cooperation with the Archaeology Department helps established the cooperative BA-programs Archaeology and Cultural History and Theory.

2008. The first students are enrolled for the Master of Arts in Cultural History and Theory.

2009. The Seminar of Cultural History and Theory and the Seminar of Aesthetics are conjoined to form the new Department of Cultural History and Theory.
