This project assumes the practices of the anthropology linked to the constitution and establishment of a series of networks of exchange of objects and information for the data collection. The project raises an analysis of the spaces and of the technical means of observation of the anthropology, as they appear in the practices of Robert Lehmann-Nitsche, who between 1897 and 1930 was “Jefe” (Chief) of the Departamento de Antropología del Museo de La Plata. His released work has been indicated like a starting point of different academic disciplines. In this project we will study how his work with the Argentine and South American collections allowed him to articulate the spaces of the field and the lab and the way he defined the “objects of the South American anthropology”. Lehmann-Nitsche, like other anthropologists of his time introduced in some debates the importance of the “study of field” to be able to observe and bear witness with your own eyes.

Drafting produces and transforms knowledge. The term “drafting” describes a cultural technique which displays a specific approach to knowledge. However, as opposed to the goal-oriented act of creation, this examination is rarely reflected upon by the designer himself. Aside from the designer’s knowledge ressources, which modify themselves during the drafting process, the processes of professional drafting places, such as the studios of designers and architects, develop an extended dimension of knowledge transformation. Hence, the presented research project examines the activities of drafting places, which are specialized in drafting processes, in the context of forms of production and transformation of knowledge.

The notion of film making as an exclusive practice of well trained professionals is disappearing. Increasingly, the media production power is being put on the hands of consumers, who can design and produce their own media material through digital applications. This change is an opportunity to understand and create novel approaches to the way media design knowledge is appropriated and applied by laypersons. This research project proposes to investigate the amateur production of moving images, and the production and circulation of vernacular knowledge in media design. The purpose is to contribute in the comprehension of the nature of contemporary moving images through the analysis and design of do-it-yourself (DIY) systems to produce moving images. The study of DIY movie productions, from an analytical and historical point of view, will build the basis to understand how these practices contribute to a shift of paradigm in media design. The more people become interested in media contents the less the so-called user-friendly concept will play a role in media design. Visual effects and tricks will lose against contemplation, social awareness, and critique. The design of DIY systems will help to closely examine the DIY-media creation and production methods. Through such design it is possible to materialize and reflect on a change from text based expressions to moving images as a new format to document and distribute knowledge in digital media.

Eunju Hwang: Boredom and Modernity in South Korea (Dissertation)
During the last 40 years, South Korea was transformed at incredible hight speed in the sense of economy, culture, technological development and religion. What would be the Korean peopleʼs psychological response to such dramatic changes? What would best define modern Korean culture at a time of great fluctuation? I find the answer in boredom. My research includes various perspectives such as Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno and Paul Virilio in order to deal with boredom as a cultural phenomenon. The thesis will analyze boredom in the Korean context, especially in the context of techno-capitalism. The contents of the thesis will be divided mainly into two parts: the causes of boredom and the effects of boredom. As for the causes of boredom in the Korean context, I would like to suggest Korean transformation from a Confucian nation to a techno-capitalist society, examining the changes in the concepts of time, subjectivity, technology and work patterns. The effects of boredom would be, in short, business. The second part would deal with the question, “how boredom is used in capitalism,” examining educational contents, entertainment industry, leisure and sex industry in South Korea. While the thesis concludes boredom as a byproduct of techno-capitalism, it will also illuminate the importance of meaningfulness as an antidote to boredom by utilizing Viktor Franklʼs theories on meaningfulness. I would like to focus on chronic and social boredom rather than temporary or personal boredom. Therefore, boredom would be interpreted in the thesis as a psychological response to a sudden transformation to techno-capitalism, rather than an inborn emotion. Although the thesis centres on the cultural-historical background of South Korea, the research outcome would be relevant to other cultures which have experienced sudden changes in technological development and capitalism.

Dipl.-Des. Jose Muñoz Alvis: Building Blocks. A cultural history of codes, compositions and dispositions (Dissertation)
Building blocks are practical materials for playing, learning and working at kindergartens, schools, universities and companies. How did building blocks, which were primarily established as toys for children, come to be practical materials used in professional and educational settings? This study explores the historical implications of particular sets of building blocks in the interdisciplinary consolidation and transformation of techniques, materials, discourses and subjects. By mapping the genealogy of building blocks from Fröbel’s “gifts” to their current systematization as interlocked blocks, this study proposes that building blocks should be understood not exclusively as concrete objects, but as the materiality of a combinatorial program, which delineates a modular system characterized by a code of composition, a context-neutrality and a semantic component. This book presents building blocks as an exemplary materialization of a dispositif of knowledge and disciplines seeking to optimize, homogenize and modularize cultural practices such as building, playing and Gestalten. In analyzing the code of building blocks, the author offers a new perspective from which to approach Friedrich Fröbel’s legacy, the permanence of these materials in our own time and the close relationship of codes and materials.

The majority of the effort in the field of Mass Customization is based on the attempt to make mass production able to offer personalization by using the chances digital technology offers us. Its literature and research handles the topic mostly from an economical point of view focussing on cost-benefit and efficiency-based approach, but it is still marginal interested to the social and cultural implications that such changing paradigm can offer us. My PhD research will focuse exactly on that, and it aimes at conceptualizing a cultural frame for contemporary industrial production to be more individuals oriented, relating people and their creative activities taking advantage of the digital revolution. I wish this research will inspire me as well as other people to design and produce new products which reflect our time and address it in an ecological and relational way.

The complexity of tasks and problems that surround us nowadays are no longer feasible to be approached through a dispersed non-integral complacence of different fields and professions. The new integrative methodology consist of an interdisciplinary laboratory of research, in one hand through investigating paradigms from nature, to be applied in material sciences, engineering, manufacturing and architectural design, while, in the other hand to investigate the historical/theoretical background and current cultural and environmental impact, as a framework of critique and feedback loop. The aim of the research is to use the new natural paradigm as a tool for sustainable architectural design, through an interdisciplinary research laboratory set through Architecture as theory and practice, Material Sciences and Cultural Sciences as an interface discipline. The focus on bringing Paradigms for a New Structuralism, is to explore and extract concepts, criteria and principles from natural/biological systems, to be applied in the development of space, structure, form, material, skin and visual expression as a synergic whole, alike the natural systems, where the built form is organized as an extension of cultural and ecological environments. The scrutiny inside the theme of component-driven architecture will be on structure of materials, specifically Bio-inspired materials, seen always as a whole in the overall systems with materialized structure, form and performance. Moreover the very specific point of research will be on Wood as a paradigm for developing Performative bio-inspired Materials and Structures.

Having majored in “Literary Criticism and Comparative Literature” I would now like to concentrate on literature of migration and of the second generation, generally focusing on those artists and movements that, since they occupy a decentred position in our culture, operate a  sabotage (linguistic but also formal) of the official one. The aim of my research is the definition of literary alternative, based upon the notion of “Creolizazion” and on the crossover of cultures and expressive medias. It will be composed of three parts: the first more specifically philosophical, (entitled: The Bandit) the second more literary (Rhizome), and the third more political/critical (The Chaos -World). The three parts will be developed autonomously, with their results and conclusions re-elaborated and confronted in an introductive chapter in which I will try to outline an idea of Counter-History as a methodology of historical/cultural analysis. The title, “The lyricism of protest,” is a quotation from the Preface to the History of Madness by Michel Foucault. I chose it because it more or less expresses the kind of literary and critical approach I will have towards the analyzed texts.
